Fatigue

Category: Forces & performance

The progressive weakening of a spring caused by repeated cycles of stress over time.

Even below the static limit, cyclic stresses can nucleate cracks that grow to fracture. Fatigue life improves with lower working stress, good surface finish and treatments such as shot peening.
